UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP

Purpose:

The Dreamkeeper Scholarship Fund awards scholarships to college-bound high school seniors and/or continuing college students based on demonstrated academic achievement, financial need, and an express interest in giving back to the Marin City community. 

Criteria:

The students eligible for assistance must reside in Marin City and/or have been enrolled in Freedom School or other Hannah programs for 2 or more years. 

 Consideration will be given to academic achievement, financial need and the student’s community service record. 

Hannah Project Service Requirement: Hannah’s Service Requirement exists to uphold the legacy of gratitude and generosity central to the Hannah Project’s mission. When students give back, they show appreciation for support received and help ensure that future Dream Keeper Scholarship recipients have equal or greater opportunities.  Generosity and giving back represent the essence and spirit of Hannah’s commitment to  its constituents and the community.  To reflect this commitment, all scholarship recipients must volunteer at least 16 hours during the academic year. 

Priority consideration will be given to students who are the first in their family to attend college. 

Guidelines:

Applicants must submit a complete application packet including 

  • a copy of their most recent Student Aid Report (SAR) 
  • a letter of recommendation from a school official and/or a community member familiar with your work and character emailed 
  • School Transcript 
  • Resume (include paid employment, internships, or volunteer service) to info@hannahprograms.org; listing of other scholarship awards you have applied for or received; and a copy of an official transcript. 

After receiving the completed application, an interview will be scheduled with the Dream Keeper Scholarship Committee. 

 

Scholarships will be awarded on an annual basis and disbursed in equal payments in September and January to the institution applicant will be attending. No payments will be made directly to the student. It will be the student’s responsibility to submit proof of enrollment including their student ID number and class schedule to receive timely scholarship payments.  Scholarship payments are contingent on full-time enrollment and maintenance of a 2.8 grade-point average (or equivalent) during the course of the award. 

Amount:

Each scholarship awarded will range between $1,500 - $4,500 annually and will be disbursed in two equal installments.

Renewal Process: This scholarship is renewable for up to 2 years maintenance of full-time enrollment status 

Maintenance of a 2.8 grade point average 

Fulfillment of the Hannah Project’s community service 

JOSIE KING SCHOLARSHIP

Who Was Josie King; 

 Josie M. King was a nurse, counselor, advisor, mentor and friend to hundreds of students at the University of California, Berkeley and Santa Cruz campuses.  Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, Josie spent most of her adult life in California where she was committed to opening opportunities for marginalized students and had a particular interest in helping re-entry and other non-traditional students. 

Purpose:

The Josie M. Scholarship is awarded to non-traditional student(s) who have decided to return to college to pursue a Bachelor’s degree after an absence from high school graduation of 5 or more years or who are returning to school after an absence of 2 or more years to earn a teaching credential.

Criteria:

The students eligible for assistance must reside in Marin City and/or the SF Bay Area. Applicants must have a household income of less than $75,000 or have demonstrated exceptional potential or success in their community; preferably, African-American, Hispanic, re-entry women, or from underserved communities; have been accepted to attend a post-secondary institution; and, are willing to make a commitment to return a measure of the benefit they have received from the Fund in the form of a future contribution to it in order that the Fund may continue to provide such scholarships for others. 

Guidelines:

Applicants for the Josie M. King Scholarship Award are required to submit 

 

  • a personal statement detailing their reason for suspending their education; 
  • why they have chosen to complete their course of studies at this time; and their career plans upon graduation. 
  • an official transcript from the last institution they attended; and 
  • two letters of recommendations from professional, community, or academic associates who have knowledge of your abilities and motivation 
  • a copy of their most recent Student Aid Report (SAR)
