STRATEGY: Offering Academic Support, College Access, Scholarships, and Counseling that Leads to College and Success for High School Aged Students

My Best Self

- MBS is a middle school transition program to help young people be better prepared for high school by developing essential academic skills to analyze complex issues, engage in creative problem solving, and begin to see themselves as citizens of the world. The materials, books, and experiences are selected with the objective of building students' sense of self-worth, discovery, efficacy and cultural awareness and identity. Classes are facilitated by young men and women of color who will draw from the broader community to incorporate literature, guest presentations, multimedia, cultural outings, conferences, college tours and other motivational activities that make success in high school and college attainable. (This offering is currently on hold pending

Freedom School 2

Leadership development program for high school students based on Freedom School values and principles.

Freedom School 2 is focused on strengthening communication and interpersonal skills; creating space for analytic and critical reflection; fostering positive involvement in school and community affairs, and enhancing knowledge of ethnic studies and history with the expectation of heightened youth involvement in civic affairs and change strategies

The Empowered Parent Group is a train the trainer leadership development program for Marin City Parents designed to :
- Help parents develop efficacy and agency;
- Increase parent-child interactions and children's participation in academic support programs.
- Expand the capacity of parents as change agents for children;
- Develop a supportive community of parents within Marin City that will support one another in both their individual skills development and joint advocacy for their children's success
- Facilitate systems change for parental involvement with increased utilization of parents in policy and process decisions

STRATEGY: Mobilizing the Community to Demand Equity in Our Schools

Saving A Generation (SAGE)

Saving a Generation (SAGE) is an education focused community change collaborative comprised of parents, school officials, educators, CBOs, students and community stakeholders to improve local schools and to ensure equitable educational opportunities for all students.

Constituents come together in a learning group environment to review performance data; develop collective strategies and solutions to mitigate multi-layered aspects of the achievement gap. Divided into working groups that focus on specific aspects of the achievement gap, identified priorities include: identifying and addressing instances of institutional racism in area school districts; improving the academic outcomes of Marin City students enrolled in local schools; reinstating 15 infant care slots lost with the closing of the Bailey Infant Center; creation of a preschool option for 20-30 Marin City toddlers and 4 year olds whose families do not qualify for state funded childcare { This priority is currently being addressed by the creation of Marin Horizon's Preschool program in Marin City and the addition of a Pre-K classroom } SAGE has organized community information sessions, parent workshops, and letter writing campaigns to ensure that parent and community concerns are aired.

What is Structural Racism?

Structural Racism is the normalization and legitimization of an array of dynamics - historical, cultural, institutional and interpersonal - that routinely advantage whites while producing cumulative and chronic adverse outcomes for people of color. It is a system of hierarchy and inequity, primarily characterized by white supremacy - the preferential treatment, privilege and power for white people at the expense of Black, Latino, Asian, Pacific Islander, Native American, Arab and other racially oppressed people. Structural Racism encompasses the entire system of white supremacy, diffused and infused in all aspects of society, including our history, culture, politics, economics and our entire social fabric.

It is the most profound and pervasive form of racism - all other forms of racism (e.g. institutional, interpersonal, internalized, etc.) emerge from structural racism.

The key indicators of structural racism are inequalities in power, access, opportunities, treatment, and policy impacts and outcomes, whether they are intentional or not.

What is Institutional Racism?

Institutional racism occurs within and between institutions. Institutional racism is discriminatory treatment, unfair policies and inequitable opportunities and impacts, based on race, produced and perpetuated by institutions (schools, mass media, etc.). Individuals within institutions take on the power of the institution when they act in ways that advantage and disadvantage people, based on race.

Dismantling Racism Workshops and Conversations

STRATEGY: Partnering with allies willing to use their privilege to expose racism and injustice wherever they see it; leverage their influence to bring those outside in joining forces with the Hannah project to end inequity in our local school systems

Hannah Ambassadors

A leadership opportunity for supporters who are interested in an on-going relationship with our organization and are dedicated to promoting the Hannah Project, our beliefs, and equitable education strategies. Ambassadors help increase fundraising, drive conversations, and/or build awareness of Hannah and equity needs - online, offline and through word-of-mouth. Ambassadors agree to undergo an orientation process and attend periodic briefings and meetings.
